One of the growing concerns technologies companies have relates to what I would call their “Right to Build”.
Most of the internet runs on open-source technology. In fact, most technologies almost by their very nature have to run at least partially on an open-source foundation. So what is open-source?
Open-source software is essentially software other people/groups/companies/non-profits have created and allow others to freely share and build off of them. Given the “copy and paste” nature of a lot of programming and development, but doing this it allows engineers to solve complicated problems much more quickly and much more efficiently. The alternative to this is “proprietary” or “closed-source”. To get even a little deeper with it, most programming is done much like typing into a blog or post (except with special characters/formatting/etc). In order to “make” a program, you essentially take that “source code”, compile it, and then you have a program you can run.
Without open-source software we wouldn’t have amazon, uber, netflix, ebay, or basically any other product or technology you use.
AI is under criticisms and because of a desire to control AI, there is action to regulate it. From a legal perspective the federal government has no standing to regulate it (AI and software regulation is not enumerated as a federal power) and since computer code is considered First Amendment protected free speech, the states shouldn’t have essentially any power to restrict the development.
Because of the status of our legal system, I believe it is deeply important for the future of Nevada to make Nevada a “Right to Build” state. This gives every existing business in Nevada a clear signal that they will be able to build without concerns of inappropriate restrictions on their ability to build. By providing emerging technology companies a proper regulatory environment to build and develop exciting products, Las Vegas could not only be known for world-class entertainment, but world-class innovation and economic growth!
