There is growing support for a strong federal government which I believe would be strongly inadvisable, to put it mildly. Over the last few elections some states have shifted from more conservative/individualist perspectives to more radical liberal perspectives. A lot of the changes have been fairly negative. I don’t say this in any attempt to be divisive, but we need to be able to speak openly about the laws that the state has passed and what the impact is on the residents and the families.
The current Democrat Majority Leader in Senate District 6 has helped push some of the most extreme policy changes that have happened in Nevada, including forcing Restorative Justice in our schools (https://www.leg.state.nv.us/App/NELIS/REL/82nd2023/Bill/10198/Text).
This bill, in application, has directly led to sexual assault and murder in Clark County School District. The policies dictated from the Nevada State Legislature put restrictions on the way school districts can approach their disciplinary policies. Reports from teachers indicate this has increased bullying and physical aggression in the school because students now have the ability to escalate much further without fear of reprisal. I’m willing to join arms with anyone who supported this bill and say that I think it is great that we tried to use legislation to make schools work better for more students, but I need everyone to stay with me when I say that in the wake of the death of a high school student (a white kid beaten to death by a group of violent students while horrifically outnumbered), we must repeal AB 330. Jonathan Lewis Jr. died for helping defend his friends property when the schools failed to provide adequate safety.
The punishment for Jonathan Lews, Jr’s bravery was his death before 18. His parents were robbed of the opportunity to watch him continue to learn and grow as a man.
Others may disagree, but the I believe that the Nevada Senate District 6 candidate that championed this bill should be leading the charge to acknowledge the mistake and repeal it. Instead of repealing it, she no doubt intends to put more radical legislation forward and intends to try to help keep moving Nevada in a direction that most Nevadan’s do not want more of.
I believe that the Nevada State Legislature has the responsibility to review the impact of existing laws and repeal them if we find them to be harmful. A part of the real tragedy of current legislation is that in addition to the murder of a Clark County School District student on school grounds during school, there are nine students that are now going into exactly the same criminal justice system the restorative justice was meant to avoid. All around it was a huge backfire and an opportunity for Nevada to learn from mistakes and then move forward.
